What the Tohoku region is
The Tohoku region consists of six prefectures in northern Honshu: Aomori, Iwate, Miyagi, Akita, Yamagata, and Fukushima.
Today, Tohoku is far more accessible.
Rail connections have improved dramatically since the opening of the Tohoku Shinkansen in 1982, followed by the Yamagata Shinkansen in 1992 and the Akita Shinkansen in 1997. The Tohoku Shinkansen was later extended all the way to Shin-Aomori Station in 2010, making travel from Tokyo to northern Tohoku faster and more convenient than ever.
Each of the six prefectures also has access to airports, offering convenient flight connections from other parts of Japan.
With its rich history, distinctive regional culture, and easy access from Tokyo and beyond, Tohoku is an ideal destination for travelers looking to discover a different side of Japan.
